• C64 keyboard acting strange

From orangepeelbeef@64:500/20 to All on Sun Dec 22 05:58:48 2019
Picked up a Commodore 64 unit, it powers up but it is very difficult to type the sub characters for most of the keys.

If we fiddle with the timing of the key presses we are able to make say an 8 appear, or a comma, but it takes a lot of practice and we are only able to
move the cursor to the left but not to the right.

makes it really hard to type LOAD"$",8

The unit came with a 1541 disk drive which spins up on connection, but then when trying to load things of the drive it never spins or does anything

board was inspected and we see no defects, no rework, caps look good, etc.

when the keys don't work it's not like they don't work at all they just print the non shifted character, so < instead of ,

i only mention the disk drive in case that is symptomatic of one of the parts.

Unit came with a datassette too, but we didn't have anything to test with,
that will be for tomorrows process.

If anyone has any ideas on this funky behavior it would be appreciated if you would pass it along ;)

I can not help you on the rest, but also just purchased a C64, C128, two 1541 drives (I need a extra data cable) and it came with some cassettes that I can not use.

My C64 was doing similar things. I ordered a replacement keyboard and it's working great now.

Well, we disassembled the keyboard, cleaned the pads and things are in much better shape. we think that the shiftlock key was permanently stuck on
    before

the disk drive turns out it was addressed at 09 with the cut trace hardware
    mod

none of the games we had would load, they all were tossing device not found,
so we soldered the trace back on to ID it as 08 and we were able to successfully load Zork I !!!
